When your past closes in, running isn’t always an option
The jobs Marcus Lowry works for at Phoenix, Inc. Investigations are quick and easy, and they don’t give him the nightmares his days as a CIA operative did. That is, until he gets involved in a case that grabs him by the throat and won’t let go.
Cole Jacobs left behind his old life on the streets to make a name for himself rebuilding high-end and vintage cars and bikes. But when a stalker threatens to kill him—and to hurt anyone who stands in his way—his past closes in on him, and he’s not sure where to turn.
The last thing Marcus wants to do is take on a charity case, and to say that he and Cole don’t see eye to eye at first is putting things mildly. But when the first attempt on Cole’s life nearly kills them both, Marcus realizes that Cole is in real danger, and Cole is forced to reveal everything. Almost everything. Because Cole’s deepest secrets could destroy them both.

REVIEW: I’ve read and loved almost all the books written by this author. I was excited to read her next spinoff story with the guys from the Men of Honor series. While the center of the storyline focuses on Cole and Marcus we do get a lot a scenes with Law, Paulo and Styx. It was great to revisit the men from Bound by Law. I do suggest reading these books in order. You’ll miss a lot of the details and information given in the previous stories. They are not to be missed.
I loved how the author jumps right into the guts of the story before the reader can even catch their breath. Cole, a former rent boy, getting his life back in order, has a stalker. With the help from the guys at Phoenix Inc., things are about to get interesting. I love the whole “who could it be” mystery, going along with the characters trying to figure it all out, gathering up the clues makes for an exciting read. And this author just does it so well.
It the midst of all the mayhem, we watch the budding romance between Cole and Marcus. They get off to a rocky start and by no means is it love at first sight. It was interesting to watch them struggle with their feelings for one another throughout the story. What was most helpful in getting to know these characters better, was the author giving us both of their POV’s. I loved knowing what the other was thinking at any given time and to really understand where both Cole and Marcus were coming from.
The stalking mystery heats up and becomes downright dangerous for our characters. There were definitely some nail biting scenes. The author did a great job in keeping the reader guessing about the mysterious stalker. Who is he and what could he possible want? It all played out very well on page, so kudos to the author for that. The climax of the story was something I didn’t see coming, and let me just say it’s a keep you on the edge of your seat read. Loved it.
What I also loved about this story was we got to catch up on Law, Paulo and Styx. I don’t know about you, but I loved their story and always wanted to read little bit more from them. Well, we get it here and I will say, they’re all doing fine.
Overall, my favorite aspect of this book has to be the author. She knows how to keep you engaged with the mystery element while making you fall in love with her characters. You really feel the emotions of each and everyone.
If you’ve never read SE Jakes, why the hell not? Highly recommended.
